RECENT NEWS:
After 33 years, West Indies win a World Cup, are new T20 champs
When Clive Lloyd held aloft the Prudential World Cup on the Lord's balcony in 1979, Chris Gayle was three months away from being born. Neither Gayle, the oldest member of today's World T20-winning West Indies side, nor any of his teammates had seen the glory years of Caribbean cricket live. But they were all witness to its downfall, sometimes from well within the cricket field.
On Sunday, 33 years after the West Indians won their second and last World Cup trophy, Darren Sammy and his men resurrected some of their lost pride.
The West Indies team won the fourth edition of the World T20 — their first — in Colombo, allowing some of the younger cricket lovers around the world to revel in something they had never seen before — the Caribbean flavour that the game has missed for the last three decades.
"This hopefully will be the beginning of things to come. We won't say we are back, but we are on the right road," said an emotional Sammy, in between dancing 'Gangnam Style' with his team and thanking God. The saviour of the day, however, was Marlon Samuels.
Choosing to bat first, West Indies found themselves in more than just a spot of bother — 14/2 at the end of six powerplay overs and 32/2 at the halfway stage of the big final. The writing was on the wall, but Samuels didn't read it. He stroked his way to a career-defining 78, with six sixes, to help WI add 105 runs in the last 10 overs.
It wasn't nearly a par score, but enough to give their triumvirate of spinners, Samuel Badree, Sunil Narine and Samuels, a target to defend — which they did by 36 runs.
"From Jamaica all the way down to Guyana, this is for you," Sammy yelled. "Thank God it is Sunday, for many people would not have gone to work had it been a weekday back home," Sammy added with the World Cup in his hands.
With the party having just started in Lanka and the resurgence of their cricket team on the global scene, they probably still won't.

ICC World T20 2012: India's hopes of semi-final dashed despite narrow win:
India's quest to regain the World Twenty20 title came to a heartbreaking end after they were knocked out of the tournament despite a thrilling one-run victory over South Africa in the final Super Eights contest on Tuesday.
Put into bat, India scored 152 for six and needed to restrict South Africa within 121 to qualify for the semifinals on net run rate but Faf Du Plessis knocked the stuffing out of the Indian bowlers with a smashing half century that put paid to their hopes of making it to the knock-out stage.
India's task was made all the more difficult after Pakistan comprehensively beat Australia by 32 runs in an earlier Super Eights match of the day as it strengthened their net run-rate. Australia and Pakistan qualify for the semifinals from Group II.
South Africa were all out for 151 in the penultimate ball to end their campaign after losing all three of their Super Eights match.
Ever since winning the inaugural edition in 2007, Mahendra Singh Dhoni and his boys have failed to reach even the semifinals of the subsequent editions.
Du Plessis hit 65 off 38 balls with the help of six boundaries and two sixes but more importantly he dashed any hope of India making it to the last four.
The defining moment came when Robin Peterson played a slow bouncer from Lakshmipathy Balaji towards short fine leg as South Africa reached 122 and it was cheered lustily by a sizeable Pakistani supporters anxiously waiting for the moment.
For India, the magic figure was 121 and the start was a right one. Zaheer Khan bowled a perfect delivery first up to dismiss Hashim Amla. The delivery pitched on the off-middle line and then moved a shade to take the outside edge of Amlas bat as Virender Sehwag took a good catch diving to his left.
Irfan Pathan got Jacques Kallis to flick one which was taken by Rohit Sharma at mid-wicket. Faf du Plessis and skipper AB de Villiers then added 30 in quick time and it was Du Plessis who started taking on the Indian bowlers.
Dhoni brought Yuvraj at the end of the Powerplay overs and it immediately paid off as he got de Villiers to play a tentative forward defensive push which clipped the off-stump bail.
However, there was no stopping du Plessis who was in a mood to dispatch everything out of sight as he raced to his half century in 29 balls with the help of three fours and two sixes.
At the halfway stage, South Africa were 73 for three and it was literally impossible for India to restrict the Proteas to 121.
Earlier, Suresh Raina scored an useful 45 while skipper Dhoni played a little cameo to help India post a respectable 152 for six after being sent into bat.
It was Raina whose contribution was a significant one as he hit five boundaries during his 34-ball knock. Skipper Dhoni also should be complimented for his 13-ball 23 as it provided the necessary impetus and helped the team cross 150-run mark.
Dhoni hit Dale Steyn for 14 runs in the penultimate over, including two powerfully struck boundaries, which proved useful in the end.
India's trouble started when they lost their top three batsmen within the Powerplay overs and then it was Raina who scripted the recovery act.
Opener Gautam Gambhir started off with a lovely cover drive but Morne Morkel knocked down his middle-stump after scoring only eight.
In-form Virat Kohli got one from Jacques Kallis that reared up and he gloved it for rival captain AB de Villiers who dived to pouch onto a spectacular leg-side catch. Kohli made just two.
Virender Sehwag lofted left-arm spinner Robin Peterson for a huge six over long-on but lost his off-stump trying to repeat the stroke the next ball. The situation demanded a bit of discretion but as his wont, the 'Nawab of Najafgarh' went for the jugular only to deepen India's misery.
Yuvraj Singh started with a majestic six over cover fence off Johan Botha's delivery and for good measure slog-swept Peterson for his second six. Another pulled boundary off Botha's bowling raised visions of a big total.
However, Morkel bowled a beauty when Yuvraj was on a quickfire 21. It pitched in the block hole and Yuvraj was bowled through the gate trying to play a flick shot.
At 68 for four, Rohit Sharma and Raina came together for a 44-run fifth wicket partnership.
The duo concentrated mostly on singles although Raina hit bulk of his boundaries over the extra cover region. The 100 came up in the 14th over when Raina lofted Botha over extra cover for a boundary.
Rohit, who was playing the second fiddle nudging the singles finally tried a non-existent sweep shot off Peterson's bowling and was adjudged leg before. Rohit made 25 off 27 balls with two boundaries.
For South Africa, Peterson and Morne Morkel took two wickets apiece while Jacques Kallis chipped in with one wicket. (PTI)
Brief Scores: India 152 for 6 in 20 overs (Suresh Raina 45, Rohit Sharma 25, MS Dhoni 23*; Robin Petersen 2 for 25, Morne Morkel 2 for 28) bt South Africa 151 all-out in 19.5 overs (Faf du Plessis 65; Zaheer Khan 3 for 22, Lakshmipathy Balaji 3 for 37, Yuvraj Singh 2 for 23) by 1 run.
Afghans show India the mirror
COLOMBO: A third fifty on the trot by the current 'Mr Dependable,' Virat Kohli and a three-wicket haul by Yuvraj Singh, at a critical stage, enabled India to snuff out an inspirational challenge from Afghanistan by 23 runs at the R Premadasa Stadium on Wednesday night in their opening World T20match.
Scorecard | Match in Pics
The minnows punched above their weight all night, but some awful catching by some butter-fingered men undid all their good work, and allowed a flat India to wriggle out.
Put in, India rode on four dropped catches, a fantastic 50 (39b, 4x4, 2x6) by Kohli, who is in the midst of a purple patch, a decent support act by Suresh Raina (38 off 33 balls, six fours), and a final flourish off skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni's bat (a four and a six off the last two balls of the innings) to reach 159 for six.
The 2007 T20 world champions then found the going with the ball difficult too, with the Afghan batsmen looking to throw their bats at everything. Mohammad Shahzad's 'helicoper shot,' with his idol MS Dhoni standing behind, especially stood out.
It was Yuvraj, scripting another chapter in his heroic comeback after overcoming a rare form of cancer, who derailed the opposition chase, as he dismissed Karim Sadiq and Asghar Stanikzai off consecutive deliveries in the 12th over.
Mohammad Nabi, perhaps atoning for the two catches that he dropped, then kept the fight alive with a 17-ball 31 (2x6, 2x4) but once he perished to R Ashwin, the game was more or less in India's bag. L Balaji finished off things with a three-wicket haul.
Earlier, the Indian batsmen, with the exception of Kohli, threatened to sizzle only to fizzle out. In a batting performance that, as is familiar these days, depended largely on Kohli, and which benefitted immensely from the Afghan fielders' largesse, India just about managed to find a respectable total.
Kohli was his usual self, stroking the ball beautifully down the ground and through the covers, but he too was helped by a dropped chance. In fact, poor fielding nullified a superb bowling performance by the Afghan bowlers.
The chief culprit was off-spinner Mohammad Nabi, who started the 'farce' by letting go of a caught-and-bowled chance off Yuvraj in the 10th over. Luckily, that didn't cost much, as Yuvi was out soon after, but Nabi's second slip was unpardonable.
He not only dropped Kohli, on 33 then, on the wide long-on boundary off Karim Sadiq in the 13th over, but let it slip off his palms for a six. The third 'gift' was reserved for Raina, who was grassed by Samiullah Shenwari off his own bowling on 19. Raina was later dropped by the 12th man Izzatullah Dawlatzai too, who joined the party by fumbling a leading edge off Shenwari.
The bumbling Afghan fielders should have taken inspiration from a brilliant opening spell by their seamers Shapoor Zadran and Dawlat Zadran. Luckily for them, India found Kohli at his best yet again. But they have work to do before Sunday, when they take on England.

T20 World Cup: Australia start with a bang
Gaurav Gupta | 13 hrs | Outplayed by Shane Watson's superb all-round show (3/26 and 51), Ireland went down by 7 wickets in their Group A World T20 game at the Premadasa Stadium.
SL vs Zim: Mendis helps Sri Lanka thrash Zimbabwe in World T20 opener :
Ajantha Mendis bettered his own T20 record by taking six wickets for just eight runs as Sri Lanka walloped minnowsZimbabwe by 82 runs in the opening match of the World Twenty20 cricket tournament on Tuesday.
Scorecard | Match in Pics
Sri Lanka recovered from a slow start to post a huge 182 for four and then bundled out Zimbabwe for 100 in 17.3 overs in the Group C match at the Mahinda Rajapakse stadium.
The Zimbabweans struggled to handle spin and were bamboozled by Ajantha (6/8) and Jeevan Mendis (3/24), who shared nine wickets between them.
Ajantha's figures were best in Twenty20 cricket as he improved on his own early figures of six for 16 which he had claimed against Australia, last year.
The hosts owed their impressive total to Kumar Sangakkara (44) and Jeevan as the two left-handers put on a 94-run stand for the fourth wicket.
Sri Lanka were 107 for three in 14 overs but Sangakkara and Jeevan took the game away from the minnows with their superb batting. Zimbabwe had done well in the early part of the Lankan innings but leaked 75 runs in the last six overs to let go the advantage.
The total proved too big to manage for Zimbabwe against an experienced bowling line-up.
Ajantha was too hot to handle as he conceded just eight runs in his four overs and two of them maiden.
The Zimbabweans could manage just five boundaries in the first 10 overs, three of them coming from the bat of Hamilton Maskadaza (20), who was top scorer for them.
Ajantha struck twice in two balls in the sixth over as he first rattled the stumps of Vusi Sibanda (11) and then had skipper Brendan Taylor stumped in the next ball.
Maskadaza was batting confidently and had even dispatched dangerous Lasith Malinga twice to the boundary line but he also failed to pick Ajantha and became his third victim.
Jeevan after contributing with the bat, struck twice in his first over as he scalped Criag Ervin (10) and Malcolm Waller, who went without troubling the scorer.
At 58 for five in 11 overs, Zimbabwe's chase was in disarray and it was matter of time when the Lanakans would complete the thumping win.

Superstitious BCCI says no to new kit
Nike, the team apparel sponsor, had unveiled the T20 jersey recently with a lot of fanfare. (AFP Photo)
NEW DELHI: In order to bring 'good luck' to Team India in the upcoming World T20 Championship in Sri Lanka, the Indian cricket board ( BCCI) has asked its players to wear the same jersey that they were wearing during the triumphant 50-over 2011 World Cup.
"This was not something the players had offered to wear. It's completely BCCI's decision to ask the players to wear the jersey which they had used during the 2011 World Cup," Ratnakar Shetty, the CAO of the board, told TOI on Thursday.
Nike, the team apparel sponsor, had unveiled the T20 jersey recently with a lot of fanfare.
The company spokesperson was not available for comments. Sources said that the board has already communicated the decision to Nike, also informing them about the reasons for it.
Interestingly, some leading Indian cricketers like captain MS Dhoni and Virender Sehwag had hailed the
new jersey.
"When we switch on the TV and see players in white, we know they are playing Test cricket. Similarly, when you see them in blue, you know an ODI is going on. Now that we have a different T20 shirt, there will be a strong association between the format and the jersey," Dhoni had reportedly said.
"I play with my heart and I play for the national flag. I like this jersey because the national colours are on my heart," Sehwag was quoted as saying during the launch of the jersey.
